I see a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! incoming.
Also, even though its a he said she said situation, and even though it hurts thinking that Randy was like that, I’m inclined to believe Alanis.

This is entirely lacking in context
Also who is Alanis King Jones

I’ve met him before, really nice guy.

I’ve added the link
And she's one of Jalopnik's journos... Though since a bunch of them left I don't know if she still writes for FP or moved elsewhere

While, thankfully, this appears to just be a wake-up moment of “Hey, please stop being dumb at press events
”
, the real oof happened in the replies with the guy who said “Even if this happened, most women drive automatics so you should just feel thankful you went to the event!”
..... I mean, coffin_dance.mp4 for that guy, cause fuckin OOF

It definitely sucks, and honestly Randy’s response doesn’t really help his case. But I was worried it would be another harassment story, so...at least it’s not that I guess?

I've met a lot of people that are nice to a select group and, maybe without realizing, quite rude to other groups.

While I have never met him, I know of multiple people who have, and have nothing but great things to say about him.

If she’s telling the truth, he acted like a dick
If she’s lying, she’s acting like a dick
There is a dick involved here somewhere, but unless there’s audio or video evidence, the identify of the dick shall never be known
Corroborating witnesses are extremely unreliable

I know Alanis well enough that I find it
extremely
unlikely she fabricated this story. Alanis is, and as long as I’ve known her always has been,
bluntly honest.

It definitely sucks, and honestly Randy’s response doesn’t really help his case.
He doesn’t have a case to help,
if she’s telling the truth all he’s guilty of is being rude/condescending to someone. This isn’t life-altering stuff here, it happened a year ago and if it bothered her that much she should have spoken up about it sooner. This recent trend about dredging up every negative interaction anyone’s ever had with someone famous in years or decades past is getting old.
![]() 07/26/2020 at 19:44 |

She doesn’t even have to be lying, nor does he. Human perception and memory is incredibly complex and unreliable over time, they could both remember the same events quite differently. This is why eyewitness testimony is the least reliable type of evidence in a court of law.

Another piece of kind of damning evidence against her, is that his ex-wife is also a track expert. So I’m kind of wondering why he would do the “Women can’t drive manual” thing when he has that evidence?

![]() 07/26/2020 at 19:48 |

It’s just odd that he would make that remark to a woman, when this is his ex-wife: https://www.trackrekord.com/lind-pobst
Maybe I’m reading too in between the lines and it wasn’t sexist, it was just a boomer having a “damn millennial” moment.

I genuinely despise the whole “Court of Twitter” people try to play.
Unless there’s another
“

who steps up to confirm, deny, provide
context
or ideally
a
smoking gun is found then
I will
still retain a stance of
innocent until proven guilty with regards
to accusations
.
I’m curious though,
why is
she
bringing
this up now?
![]() 07/26/2020 at 20:20 |

This isn’t bringing up someone’s committing sexual assault/harassment, I don’t see what it has to do with the ‘ recent trend’ of bringing those things to light. I certainly don’t have an issue with it. Old or not, people should be held accountable for their actions, at the very least by having those actions made public.
![]() 07/26/2020 at 20:22 |

Also who is Alanis King Jone s
Alan is King Jones, and King Jones is Alan. Seems pretty straightforward to me .
![]() 07/26/2020 at 20:24 |

Eh. I’m not sure if I justify this sort of shit stirring . A guy was an ass to you a full year ago - let it lie. Maybe he shouldn’t have said it, maybe you missed the point of what he was saying.
Who gains what by trying to start a fight over it so much later?
![]() 07/26/2020 at 20:36 |

If I recall, Alanis mentioned this on Jalopnik because I’m sure I replied scoffing at the guy’s audacity.
![]() 07/26/2020 at 20:39 |

The issue is that as memory fades so does veracity. It’s important to make objections known as soon as they occur. Dwelling on it for a year or longer doesn’t help anyone.
And no I don’t believe all accusers. I’ve seen too many friends’ lives ruined by the lies of their ex-spouses to be that na

I’ve met and raced against Randy for maybe 20 years. Most recently was when I was in World Challenge TC class where we ran in GT class race. We mostly amateur drivers in TC class were their rolling chicanes. Literally, I was being passed with 30 to 40 mph speed differentials on the straights.
The last time I raced him I had the misfortune of getting lapped by a pack consisting of him and the other top 3 GT leaders at Mid Ohio turn 1. It’s a nasty 90 mph kink with poor runoff and I had no where to go. My goose was cooked. No problem for Randy, he just passed me on the outside on the grass with his series champion Turbo 4WD Volvo. We joked about it afterwards.
I could have cost him the race. Yet to me and the other TC class drivers he was nothing but positive and gracious.
I cannot believe there was any ill will in his interaction described here. If somebody thinks otherwise, talk to him and judge his response.
![]() 07/26/2020 at 20:45 |

The first interaction I could almost see him saying it as a razz joke about her being a “damn millennial”, perhaps in poor taste and thus taken the wrong way. The second seems more condescending but I’d like to know if perhaps he thought she was struggling with either the car or the track, perhaps both. The 3rd:
?
Just based on the videos I’ve seen of Randy, he seems kind of playful and perhaps potentially Non-PC. Alanis is very much propenent about women in automotive, however there’s been some FP articles where I question her stance as being overly pessimistic and seeking to complain. Perhaps this is a case of oil and water?
Either way, it’s “Twitter Court” where people love to flip into guilty until proven innocent,
so the hell with that nonsense.

The odds of the accusations being false is pretty low, and it gets even lower with each subsequent person that accuses someone of the same thing.
Sexual assault is traumatic, and without getting into a whole thing, it’s not as simple as just reporting it the next day/soon after. It’s not like a fender bender. I don’t place a lot of value on anecdotal evidence
![]() 07/26/2020 at 20:57 |
|
There’s no “if” here: Alanis was Jalopnik’s motor racing columnist always seemed pretty low on drama. I expect you remember pretty well when you’re talked down to by a known figure in the sport for being the only girl in the room. He on the other hand likely won’t remember the name of who interviewed him last week.
Storm in a gated manual
teacup tho.

I think somw sexual harrastment cases started to bubble up in the auto journalism world and maybe she thought it was appropriate to bring out.

It could be an age thing. But certainly confusing her with the rep just shows that he instinctively didn’t care much for the female journos
there.
Based on Alanis’ recount of the events.

My thoughts too. He didn’t know it when he woke up this morning but he is now a sexist and ageist per the court of twitter. Where does he go to get his reputation back?.........

Jalopnik journo - kind of an oxymoron
![]() 07/26/2020 at 21:37 |

You know I had a thought about that and I believe those were strictly out of emotion:
There’s been times where I’ve opened up the comment box and start smashing away at the keyboard because I’m unhappy and disagree.
However,
I’ve learned to stop, take an hour or 2 to reflect on what’s been presented
,
and come back nuanced and diplomatic. Especially as you can’t delete Kinja comments or change after 15min.
I think this genuinely caught Randy off guard and his responses were completely reactionary with heavy emotion.
I personally wouldn’t appreciate this kind of deliverance. Would it not have been fair to Randy for Alanis
to contact
him personally about the incident instead of dropping this bomb? We all know the state of Twitter and how people react on there to such things.
![]() 07/26/2020 at 22:06 |

I honestly don’t know, as presented Randy has made his thoughts known about women in motor-sport through media and his ex-wife is also racer.
I just replied to tae with regards to how manipulative Twitter is and thus I have no intention of changing my stance of my
first post sentence. I’m disappointed that Alanis didn’t discuss the incident with Randy before posting to Twitter.
Judging by Randy’s tweets you’re absolutely correct; he certainly didn’t expect to wake-up this morning to the “twitt-ch fork mob”, and unfortunately his emotional reaction and recant simply made it worse for him.
I’d like to simply know the truth because they seem to have vastly different views on their interaction, so much so that
Randy can’t recognize
her...

There’s been times where I’ve opened up the comment box and start smashing away at the keyboard because I’m unhappy and disagree.
I personally find what works best for me in these situations is to close the browser and find something else to do and not respond at all.

It’s a option I typically reserve for people that are intolerant and dive to vulgar and or personal attacks. I want communication
with people I disagree with because I believe in options and considerations for thoughts.
This incident unfortunately got the best of Randy in reply due to emotion, and unfortunately he fell in to the kangaroo court that is Twitter and a screen-cap trap. With a cooler head he could have pipped her
by asking
why she didn’t private message him about this incident if that’s the way she felt.

I say he wasn’t shaming her for being a girl, but for being a Jalopnik blogger, since they are in NY and don’t own cars....
![]() 07/27/2020 at 11:30 |

I kinda assumed we were talking about people being intolerant or diving to vulgar and or personal attacks from the fact you needed to take a couple hours to cool down.
Randy would have benefited from my advise.
![]() 07/27/2020 at 11:54 |

I should have been clearer, I don’t place a lot of value on anecdotal evidence(alone) when it’s being used to establish something systemic or generalizations. I believe your friends had those false accusations, I don’t think that that means that is commonplace.
You’re also talking about Alanis’ experience when I’m not. I’m talking about you lumping her thread of tweets above in with the ‘recent trend’ of exposing sexual abuse, when it doesn’t really fit.
This is from the UK, but there’s lots of other evidence to support it. False accusations are very rare, we don’t have to believe everyone, but automatically not believing accusations until you’ve been shown definite smoking gun proof is...naive and a disservice to victims.
http://www.open.ac.uk/research/news/false-accusations-sexual-violence
I don’t want to make this into a ‘ debate’ and I’m not upset with you.

I find people that are able to provide a solidly based argument for opposition do this for me.
The whole ad hominem and character assassination attempts don’t bother me
as I’ve come to terms they’re likely
ideological/political zealots, activists and recruiters. One

Alanis was the resident NASCAR expert, think she did the motor racing roundup for a while too.
